I don't think today could be a more fitting time to tell you all about our jaunt to Kefalonia, not only has Summer officially arrived in the UK but I'm finally over the trauma of leaving the beautiful Ioanian isle that is Kefalonia - I joke, I joke.

You could say the man friend and I are creatures of habit as we love nothing more than visiting the Greek isles, you name it and we've probably holidayed there but I must say that Kefalonia is the least touristy one we've ever visited. Not only did this make for a very chilled and relaxing holiday - there was hardly ever anyone around (and definitely no fighting for sun loungers) but the whole island felt very authentic and unspoilt.
Made famous by the film Captain Corelli's Mandolin Kefalonia is ideal for those wanting to get away from it all and embrace the traditional Greek way of life, there wasn't an English pub or greasy spoon in sight! Speaking of food the boy and I found any excuse to chow down on typical Greek dishes including chicken souvlaki pittas, moussaka, wholesome stews and serious amounts of tzatsiki. There certainly were no food horrors or anything vaguely resembling these dishes*.
Even though I kicked back and chilled out, I'm talking regular afternoon naps guys, I refused to stop styling it up...
Craig and I stayed at the Apollonion Resort & Spa which was just outside Lixouri and a short boat ride from the north side of Kefalonia. Apart from another hotel and a typical Greek taverna there was little else in walking distance, except the beautiful beach but the boy and I didn't complain. Our haven of a hotel had everything you could ever need from a heavenly spa to an art gallery and even an outdoor cinema where we caught up on the latest releases - FYI Argo is amazing.
After devouring several reads (Gone Girl, The Wedding Night and Revenge Wears Prada in case you were wondering) and soaking up our fair share of sunshine we decided it was time to explore the rest of the island...
From the Drograti caves full of stalagmites and stalactites, to the underground cave of Melissani which housed the most serene lake we had a magical time exploring the real Kefalonia .
Wherever Craig and I explored we always made friends...

And in true blogger fashion there was always time for a picture...
I usually find the real test of a good holiday is whether you'd visit your destination of choice again, so what's the verdict? I would love to visit Kefalonia again and spend more time in the north, particularly in Fiskardo which can be seen in the four shots above. Although popular with the rich and famous Fiskardo still feels traditional with the addition of quirky boutiques and a cool cafe culture which isn't found in more sleepier parts of Kefalonia. After the month of May this break was exactly what we needed and I must say it lived up to our high expectations.
For now though it's time to wave Kalimera to Kefalonia, embrace the British Summer and get ready to complete on our first ever house purchase. On the last day of our holiday the boy uttered the following words 'returning home marks the start of a new chapter Han', for once Craig I couldn't have said it better myself.

Have you ever visited any of the Greek isles? Would Kefalonia be up your street?
